The Day of Covering
Yom Kippur is considered by millions to be the holiest day of the Jewish year. Many call it The Day of Atonement. Many think or hope they will be made right with God and receive Life. In actuality, it was the Day of Covering.
The Day of hiding.
The Day of sweeping it under the rug.
The Day of delay.
The Day of kicking the can down the road.
The Day of a promise but nothing practical.
The Day of doing nothing real but waiting for Reality to, one day, arrive.
The Day of watching a long shadow as Something or Someone approached but was not yet in plain sight.
Forty years before the temple in Jerusalem was destroyed (70 AD), Messiah came and fulfilled the Day of Covering. It was not by another year of covering but by working reality.
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.(Heb 9:12 KJV)
And not only so , but we are also boasting in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom now we did receive the reconciliation; (Rom 5:11 YLT)
In a sense Jesus worked “atonement” in fulfilling the prophetic feast day (Rom 5:11 KJV). Not atonement strictly speaking but rather what atonement points forward to. Jesus' sacrifice on the cross as our substitute did not work merely atonement or only annual covering. He did not just pretend that things will be alright. It was not even a promise that sin will be taken care of someday.
In Jesus we not only see the reality of what the Day of Atonement meant (a temporary covering until real salvation would come), we now have eternal reconciliation with God (redemption).
God allowed the temple in Jerusalem to be destroyed to make the permanent statement that the promises of future salvation have been fulfilled in Christ and His work.
Many who believe in the Day of Atonement don't know it has already been fulfilled. Many who claim to believe in redemption really do not believe in eternal redemption. Some do not believe that Messiah has come yet. Many others do not believe that Jesus has worked eternal forgiveness, reaching even into the future.
That's just too good to be true.
Yes, the Gospel of Jesus the Christ is the almost too good to be true good news.
